The Rabab
The Rabab had a pear shaped body and consisted of two strings made of pure silk. They were attached to an end pin and strung pegs. When the strings were tuned, they were tuned in fifths. The Rabab was held on the lap and played with a bow with resin rubbed on it.
The Rebec
The Rebec first appeared during the middle of the 11th century in Spain. It was made with three strings instead of two, and was made with wood as well. When played, the Rebec was placed on the shoulder, similar to the violin. Both the Rabab’s and the Rebec’s music came from the c holes.
The Vielle

It was later referred to as the ‘vielle à rue (vielle à roue).’ And if you want to know a strange fact, some people called the Vielle a hurdy gurdy!
